Rick

Two days after Fletcher and Vienna shifted their relationship, we were leaving Fletcher to handle the house without us for twenty-four hours. Possibly longer, but we would cross that bridge when we came to it. When Vienna told me about the next job and how far we would have to go, I went to work preparing meals and a list of tasks for Fletcher.

Everything had been set up, all he had to do was follow warming instructions and he could feed himself and our guest. The guest was not something he really wanted to deal with. While he said nothing to Vienna, the objection reflected in his eyes. I waited until we had a moment before I suggested he put on headphones.

There was no reason for him to talk to our guest. He could deliver the meals and leave. I took care of his next washing, delivering bath water and clean clothes. It wasn’t anything he would need to deal with. Something I assured him of.

“So you don’t have to hurry back?” He’d tried not to look worried, but the way he rubbed the back of his neck and glanced at the laundry room like it might attack him said otherwise.

“No,” I agreed. “We don’t have to, but we will be back as soon as Vienna’s work is done.”

That was as much of a promise as I could make him. He’d nodded, clearly distracted by the prospect. We left mid-morning, since Vienna preferred to drive to our destination. I didn’t ask any questions beyond making sure I had a list of everything she needed.

“We’ll be making a stop on the way with a supplier,” she’d told me. “How much deniability do you want?”

That was the first time she’d ever asked me that. “None.”

The warning look she wore made me smile. “Rick…”

“I don’t need deniability. You will tell me what I need to know, but if I can do more, help more, tell me that too.” The simple truth was often the best. When she told me about what Fletcher asked for, I’d considered it and I’d agreed. I’d even enjoyed how she teased and taught him in the gym.

Later, while I prepared their lunches for them to consume after they’d finally come downstairs, I searched for an element of jealousy. Fletcher’s more irritating qualities—his flirtatiousness—was still in evidence, but calmer. Vienna also seemed far more relaxed than she had earlier.

This was a good thing. When she slept in his room, she told me I could still sleep in hers. I didn’t care much for having her so far away. The second night, she’d slept in her bed with me, but Fletcher also didn’t go to bed. Not as far as I could tell.

He was still asleep when we got ready to leave. When we got back, I would suggest he just sleep in Vienna’s bed with us. Maybe not every night, but enough that he would actually sleep. One night with her had done him wonders, even the dark shadows beneath his eyes had improved.
